IGFA WORLD RECORD

The Final Cast That Made History

What began as a day on the water to test a new rod prototype ended with a remarkable 13.15 kg toman and an official IGFA world record recognition.

A Day of Testing

Mohd Aliff, better known among local anglers as Rapala Oz, has built a reputation around casting for toman across the Klang Valley. As a fishing guide at Lake Haven Puchong, his ability to locate productive water and identify areas holding juvenile toman has earned him the nickname "Mata Helang".

On the day of the record catch in Rawang, Aliff was not initially setting out with the intention of breaking a world record. He was fishing alongside Jimoque Shah, with the main purpose of testing the strength and performance of a new prototype rod in real fishing conditions.

The Final Cast

Near the end of the session, a final cast close to a jetty produced an unexpected strike. Aliff was fishing with a PE2 rod and a Pok Tam Double Blade Buzzbait, a surface lure designed to create a strong disturbance across the water.

At first, the strike did not seem to suggest anything extraordinary. Aliff initially believed he had hooked an average-sized toman. The fight, however, quickly revealed that something much bigger was on the other end of the line.

After successfully landing the fish, the team realised they had a remarkable specimen on their hands.

13.15 Kilograms

The toman was weighed and measured twice to ensure that the catch could be properly verified before the record application was submitted.

The final weight came in at 13.15 kg, equivalent to 29 lb. The application was subsequently submitted through Milkfish Lady Club, the IGFA representative in Malaysia.

Official IGFA Recognition

On 22 December 2022, IGFA officially recognised Mohd Aliff's catch in the 50 lb line class.

The achievement placed Aliff among Malaysian anglers whose catches have earned a place in the IGFA world record listings, further highlighting the quality of sport fishing found in Malaysian waters.
